As of 2387, Captain Ezri Dax of the USS Aventine is dead. Both Ezri and the Dax symbiote are no more, aged to dust in seconds. There will be no more Dax, no miraculous resurrection. Her first officer, Commander Sam Bowers, now commands the ship as Captain. It's official, the Star Trek Coda trilogy has begun, and as of Book 1 the casualties are already mounting up, and no-one is safe. Dax from DS9 is gone, Taurik from VOY is gone, and others seen in the novels have fallen, and entire alternate timelines have been erased. After 20 years of being the Prime Universe (started back in 2001), something officially allowed by CBS, the Star Trek Expanded Universe of novels has had the rug pulled out from it by CBS s new Trek shows. Basically CBS is doing a Disney on Trek. However, the Expanded Universe writers are fighting back, and are determined to keep the Prime Universe of their novels safe as best they can, and there is a cheeky reference in Coda's book 1 that PICARD is indeed set
